Georgetown, Colorado

It was a beautiful day today with temps in the mid 70’s.  We boarded a steam engine train this morning.  Our trip took us over the famous Georgetown loop high bridge which was originally completed in 1884, torn down in 1938, and completely rebuilt in 1984 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of its first construction.  The original right of way required a design that “cork-screwed” from Georgetown to Silver Plume, gaining more than 600 feet in elevation over 3 miles of twists, turns, and one loop. The views were unbelievable.  We had a surprise on the way back the train was “robbed” and there was a big shoot out! don't worry everything turned out ok the good guys came and saved the day! J

Next we had lunch at the Alpine restaurant which is located in the old train depot.  The food was excellent, I had the Popeye salad which had spinach, mixed greens, crumbled bacon, cranberries, feta cheese and candied pecans, and it was so good! Now we had the energy to walk the Historic downtown.

Founded in 1859, Georgetown grew from a small mining camp tucked in a scenic valley into Colorado’s first great silver mining town and its third most populated city by the 1880s. Georgetown is known as the “Silver Queen of the Rockies”. This rich legacy has graced Georgetown with more than 200 Victorian buildings.  I love touring old towns with their great shops, antiques, and boutiques they even had a great bakery and yes we had to buy some goodies!

A perfect day with my Best Friend.
